Foundation Phase (Section 1)

1.1/1.2 – Outline the background of the Foundation Phase Framework in Wales and explain the difference between the concept of a Foundation Phase Framework and a structured curriculum.
Foundation Phase is aimed at children in Wales who are 3-7 years old. There are 7 areas of learning which are Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity; Language, Literacy and Communication Skills; Mathematical Development; Welsh Language Development; Knowledge and Understanding of the World; Physical Development and Creative Development.
In Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity children learn about themselves and their relationships with other children and staff, children are encouraged to develop their selfesteem and understand other children’s cultures and beliefs.
In Language, Literacy and Communication Skills children are encouraged to express their feelings through a variety of activity such as sand and water play and role play, they are also encouraged to ask questions and voice their opinions.
In Mathematical Development children are encouraged to use problem solving, counting and adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying, they are also encouraged to explore and estimate real life problems outdoors as well as indoors.
In Welsh Language Development children are encouraged to learn Welsh by listening to other children and/or staff speaking in Welsh, speak Welsh themselves and learn about Wales.
In Knowledge and Understanding of the World children are encouraged to explore the outside world and to ask and answer questions about the outside world.
In Physical Development children are encouraged to use their fine and gross motor skills. Fine motor skills are small movements, for example grabbing an object nearby using your hands. Gross motor skills are large movements, for example jumping.
In Creative Development children are encouraged to use their imagination and express their feelings through arts and crafts,...
