2.1: Children and young people's development is influenced by a range of personal factors. These factors affect children and young people's development and is usually knowledgeable by genetics.

Health status:
In some cases children are born with a condition that will automatically affect them, such as a blood disorder. Other children could have a predisposition towards certain diseases but do not develop them unless they are triggered. For instance, a child who lives in damp conditions or has parents who smoke may be likely to develop asthma. Ill health can affect many aspects of children's development. It could restrict children from what they want to do because of their conditions or make them feel isolated and not want to take part or want to play. It is important to ensure that children with a medical condition miss out on as little as possible.

Learning difficulties and sensory impairment:
Any aspects of children's development can be affected by learning difficulties and sensory impairments. This includes physical development, social and emotion development, cognitive development, speech and language and communication development. Children with learning difficulties need extra support with certain areas of development and may develop a low self esteem because they get frustrated with themselves for not being able to do something.
