Discovery Essay - Tempest

ESSAY QUESTION
DISCUSS HOW YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF DISCOVERY HAS BEEN ADDED TO BY YOUR STUDY OF THE TEMPEST.

Through a close study of the Tempest, one can come to understand that ultimately the initiation of discovery is shaped by an individual’s pre-existing values and contexts, as these can result in an individual embracing the possibility of discovery or rejecting revelations that occur. Indeed, this concept has been made evident through my study of unexpected discovery, self-discovery and the influence of others on the process of discovery in the Tempest.

Unexpected discoveries illustrate the importance of choice on discovery by an individual, as shaped by their pre-existing ideals. This concept is evident throughout the Tempest but specifically within Act 2 Scene 1. The beginning of the act is an exchange between Antonio and Gonzalo in which their respective personality types are exposed to the audience. Gonzalo embraces the unexpected discovery of the island and attempts to persuade the others of the Royal Court to do the same as a result of his personal values. The distinct opposite of this acceptance is the rejection of this discovery by Antonio and Sebastian. This rejection can be interpreted to the pair being scared of the unexpected as they make fun of Gonzalo’s embrace, “Look, he’s winding up the watch of his wit, by and by it will strike”. Through the use of a metaphor, the audience is exposed to Sebastian’s values and his rejection of discovery that is emphasised while he makes fun of Gonzalo.
