FIGHTING ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION

The Earth is running out of resources to sustain its organisms. Human kind is at the forefront wearing out the planet. It is upon people that they reverse the situation at hand now. Everyone can alleviate environmental degradation by employing the three concepts namely reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce is the process of minimizing the amount of waste produced by a person or society. To help reduce people must avoid buying excessive goods. By so doing they reduce the amount of rubbish they have to throw later. People use their own shopping bags when shopping to reduce the amount of plastic bags that are left lying around after use. These plastics bags are non-degradable and can cause harm to the environment. Furthermore the society should avoid using disposable products like polystyrene cups and plates as they cannot be used twice. They should be replaced with everyone’s own plastic ware thus reducing waste.
The second factor, recycling, is turning waste materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful material. Recycling conserves raw materials. Many resources are finite, they can be exhausted sooner or later. According to Paul Harrison of Benefits of Recycling.com, by recycling over 1 million tons of steel, Pennysylvanian government saved 1.3 million tons of iron ore, 718 000 tons of coal and 62000 tons of limestone in 2004.
By recycling, people reduce pollution and help in mitigating global warming. If the society throw away their used products or burn them instead of recycling, they pollute and the emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere depleting the ozone layer and causing greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling reduces waste materials in landfills. In most cities landfills are designed to contain toxic waste but if the landfills start filling up they begin to leak and contaminate water...
