1. Purpose. This manual provides an overview of coastal geology and a discussion of data sources and field

study methods applicable to coastal geological studies. This manual is intended for use by USACE engineers,
geologists, and oceanographers tasked with conducting coastal geological investigations.
2. Applicability. This manual applies to all HQUSACE elements, major subordinate commands, districts,

laboratories, and field operating activities having civil works responsibilities.
