CAPITAL   PUNISHMENT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

For my persuasive presentation, I have chosen capital punishment as my topic. Capital punishment also known as the death penalty is the execution of a convicted criminal by countries, as punishment for crimes known as capital crimes or capital offences. These crimes are mostly serious crimes that include murder, rape, treason etc.
Historically, the execution of criminals and political opponents was used by nearly all societies in all different countries of the world, both to punish crime and to suppress political dissent. For this presentation, I enlightened the listeners with the history of capital punishment, where it still occurs worldwide (mainly on China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, USA etc.) and the different types of capital punishment used nowadays compared to what methods they used during the 18th century. Additionally, the explanation of the most frequent execution method used by the USA.
According to online sources, about 2/3 of the world agree with the death penalty for people convicted of murder. As time passes by public positive opinion has decreased, mainly because religious beliefs often affect the way that a person feels on this subject.
The arguments for capital punishment are the deterrence argument, human rights argument and execution of the innocent argument (explain in the presentation). The arguments against capital punishment are also deterrence argument (in the sense that no one has ever been able to demonstrate statistically that killing murderers deters others), unfair judgment due to racial discrimination, its financial costs to execute the prisoner along with the human rights argument and execution of the innocent argument. And lastly, my conclusion and final thoughts on whether or not capital punishment should be retained or not.
