The bumper of a car is a safety device designed to absorb force during a crash with minimal damage to itself or the vehicle. A bumper is a shield made of steel, aluminum, rubber, or plastic that is mounted on the front and rear of a passenger car. Some bumpers use energy absorbers or brackets and others are made with a foam cushioning material. When a low speed collision occurs, the bumper system absorbs the shock to prevent or reduce damage to the car. Their main purpose is to serve as a spacer between the bar and the bumper cover and not as an energy absorber. Currently few, if any, bumper bars are attached to the vehicle structure through mechanisms like shock absorbers.
