The field I chose to write about is the medical coding field. I chose this field because I like working on computers, using different programs and being independent. The educational requirements for a medical coder requires a very strong knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biology and medical terminology courses.   The medical coder must have a high school diploma, postsecondary certificate such as the Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P) credentials. The coder will also need to be computer savvy, working independently, and attention to detail to translate information accurately and precisely.  
The job description for the medical coding specialist are responsible for coding the healthcare claims so that they can be reimbursed from insurance companies and government programs (Medicare). The coder may work in hospitals, doctor’s offices and clinics and they use coding software to assign the procedures and diagnosis codes to bill the insurance companies. The software they will use is the: International Classification of Diseases (ICD) used by physicians and other healthcare providers to classify and code all diagnoses, symptoms and procedures recorded in combination with hospital care. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) is used to report surgical, diagnostic procedures and services and medical to health insurance agencies and physicians. The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) which has two levels and is a system of codes used to identify medical procedures and services. It is used mainly for billing purposes. There are 2 levels, level 1 mainly for procedures and services provided by physicians and level 2 for equipment supplies and some other services not included in level 1.
