Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30 million km² , including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of the Earth's total surface area and 20 percent of the total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2014, it accounts for approximately 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Read Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagoes.

Location:
Nigeria is located in the western part of Africa between latitudes 4 16’ N and 1352’ N; and between longitudes 249’ E 1437’ E. Nigeria borders the Gulf of Guinea, between Benin and Cameroon. It has a total area of 923,768 sq km. The land area is 910,768 sq km while water covers 13,000 sq km. The Land Boundaries total 4,047 km with border countries: Benin 773 km, Cameroon 1,690 km, Chad 87 km and Niger 1,497 km. The Coastal marine area is 853 km; territorial sea is 12 nm; exclusive economic zone is 200 nm while the continental shelf is 200-m depth.

The climate varies from Equatorial in south, tropical in the centre, and arid in north.
Population:
The population of Nigeria is 135,031,164 with a growth rate of 2.8% annually. Ethnic Groups: Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, is composed of more than 250 ethnic groups. The following are the most populous and politically influential: Hausa and Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%, and Tiv 2.5%.
