12 step Program Assignment
Attend one (1) open meeting during the time of this course. The visit may be to any of the following programs at any location the student may choose. The 12-step programs are conducted 7-days a week, 24-hours a day. Students may choose from Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Over-eaters Anonymous, Al-Teen, Al-Anon, or Nar-Anon.
The student will make the arrangements and visit any of the above named 12-step program programs or groups.   As a student, you will be an observant. This means that you do not have to speak, unless you desire. The student will visit only OPEN meetings. You may attend the meetings with another student but please no more than three students at any one meeting. Grading criteria for the write up is included in this SIP.
Objectives
The purpose of this learning experience is to allow the student to understand the philosophy of the 12-step programs, and experience this format of intervention modality.   Upon completion of this learning experience, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify community resources used in working with addictive behaviors.
  2. Describe the Steps and the Traditions associated with this type of program
  3. Differentiate between a closed and an open meeting
  4. Describe the support system and encouragement in a 12-step program.
  5. Compare and contrast the roles of an enabler or codependent person with that of the addict.
  6. Describe the roles family members play in addiction.

Following attending the meeting submit a summary (type written) to the clinical instructor on the first day of clinical. The summary must address all of the items included in the rubric for grading. (see next page). The rubric must be attached to the submitted paper or points will be deducted.
