12 Years a Slave: Reflection

Eliza- Her character proves that a mother will fend for her children. Being black women we are supposed to be loud and expect things to be handed to us. She cries and protects her children. Nothing anyone does or say will allow her to forget her children and she has no authority.
Tibeats- Tibbetts shows his power when the slaves come in. He allows his white authority to get in the way of not seeing black as they are human rather than as property. He is what in today society is called mentally ill. Nothing is never enough for him if he doesn’t get his way he has a problem and does not see a problem with it.
Patsey- She is the “obedient” slave. For the most part she does as she is told and does not complain publically about it. She does it secretly and contemplates suicide. She constantly is beat and mistreated. Although the mistress does not like her she is constantly raped and “loved” by the master. She is humiliated in front of everyone and she is used throughout the plantation.
Mistress Shaw- Mistress Shaw is like the fairy Godmother. The grandma of the group. She signifies wisdom and knowledge. Although she is black she is not a slave. Even though she has authority she does not use it wrongfully. Her superiority is not used
Master Ford- Mr. Ford is the “good” master. Nothing like the other masters.   He is not careless and he is very well enough a caring man and does not use his authority to bring down the “nigger.” He does his best to fend for the blacks of his plantation.
Mistress Ford- As a white women she seems heartless. She can’t be touched or broken.
Master Epps- He is the opposite of Mr. Ford. Although some of his characteristics are similar he does use his authority to prove his superiority over the niggers.
Mistress Epps- She is jealous. She sees that she can/ but can’t compete with the slave woman. She allows her authority to get in the way of her position. She uses her authority unlike others to...
