Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice
      1.1 - Explain what it means to have a duty of care in own work role
In work role what my it means to have duty of care underpins everything that I do, it underlies the codes of practice and this should be built into my practice on a day-to-day level. It is also a legal requirement and would be tested in court in the event of negligence or malpractice. A requirement to exercise a reasonable degree of attention and caution to avoid negligence which would lead to harm to other people.
As a support worker I have a duty of care to the people I support, my colleagues, my employer, and myself. In my employment I have to act in the client’s best interests and must do so with their consent unless I have evidence that the client’s lacks capacity to make the particular decision at the time it needs to be made.
In applying Duty of care it ensures that my client is protected from harm and is kept safe from abuse by staff, other clients, family and friends. I have received specific training regarding safeguarding and this makes it clear that my duty of care is to report and record all relevant information related to unprofessional conduct or behaviour that may contribute to abuse. This may be perpetrated by a colleague or any other person who has contact with the client. This procedure ensures that I am protected and feel confident to report my suspicions and protects the client and keeps them safe.

A client may refuse to participate in an assessment that will determine future support, this is their right and it is my duty of care to respect this decision. However, in the best interests of the client I would provide them with information as to why they should undergo the assessment and then offer them the opportunity to participate in the assessment at a later time.
