To Kill a Mocking Bird-Harper Lee

In the novel ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ Harper Lee has created one of the greatly loved characters of English Literature. What are the qualities that people admire in his character?

In the engaging novel ‘To kill a mockingbird’ Harper Lee has created a thoroughly admirable character, Atticus. Atticus is a character that demonstrates all the ideal qualities in a person, it is almost as if he is too good to be true. In the novel, Harper Lee shows Atticus’s strong qualities by being a good fatherly figure, a gentleman and a knowledgeable lawyer.

Atticus is a father who is utterly devoted to his children. Atticus’s qualities are very much shown through being a good father. One of these qualities is understanding. Atticus is understanding towards his children. An example of this is; ‘You’re right. We’d better keep this blanket to ourselves. Someday maybe, scout you can thank him for covering her up.’ Pg 80. Jem was telling Atticus that they couldn’t take the blanket back to Boo because of Mr Radley. Atticus completely understood and no questions were asked. This just comes to show how he cares a lot about Jem and he could tell that he really didn’t want to take the blanket back. Another quality that Atticus has towards being a wonderful father is Wisdom; ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view. Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’ This is a very valid quality as he is helping his daughter through a hard time and by allowing her to think about the other person by showing her wisdom.

Atticus also has another distinct quality and that is intuitiveness. In which he is able to tell when his children are troubled.’ After supper, Atticus sat down with the paper and called, Scout ready to read,, Atticus sat down with the paper and called ‘ Scout ready to read?.. And I went to the front porch. Atticus followed me.’ Pg 32. Atticus followed Scout as he could sense something was the matter. ‘Something wrong,...
