Assignment One (RES 5101)

The impact of closing a rural school: A qualitative analysis

Objective: To explore the effects of closing a rural school and the impact on mothers who feel a loss of a sense of community.

Design: An interview based study using grounded theory principles to analyse the qualitative data.

Methods: Interviews were conducted with 6 women who felt the loss of community.

Results: Four main categories were identified from the interviews: family life, government, community and change. Two concepts were identified, loss of control and change (acceptance/fighting spirit). These linked the categories previously identified.

Conclusions: The women felt that the closure of the school took away their ability to control the education of their children. Anger and hate were directed towards the government because of the lack of adequate information and support for the women and the wider community. Acceptance was minimal even though some mothers believed that the change would offer new and varied opportunities.

CHAPTER ONE:   INTERVIEW ANALYSIS
1.1 Introduction
Qualitative research is dependent on the researcher. It is the researcher who makes the decisions, not the data (Morse & Richards 2007). Most importantly Morse & Richards commented (2007, p.16):
… it is not enough to...
