Disability Discrimination Act 1995
This act deals with discrimination against disabled people. It applies to employers with more than fifteen or more requires reasonable adjustments be made when providing goods, facilities and services.
SEN code of practice 2002
It is designed to help the local authorities, head teachers and governors of schools, early education practitioners and other interested parties makes effective decisions for children with special educational needs.
It sets out guidance on the processes and procedures that should be put in place to enable children with special educational needs to reach their potential, be included in their local communities and make a successful transition to adulthood. Those with statutory responsibilities for special educational needs must have regard to the code. However, the code only gives guidance - it does not tell those involved in special education what to do in every case. Professional staff are expected to use their judgement about how best to support children with special educational needs.
Sex Discrimination act 1970 and 1984
The sex discrimination acts make it illegal to discriminate against someone on the grounds of gender and protects against sexual harassment.
As a result of these acts the Equal Opportunities Commission was established, it distributes information about discrimination and conducts investigations into illegal sexual discrimination.
UN Convention on the Rights of the child 1989
The convention spells out the basic human rights that all children have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services.
