The play A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a very interesting and intriguing play. The play is about the endless pursuit of true love. True love in the play is not giving up on love, no matter how hard things get. Throughout the play most of the characters are chasing something they love. Love of another being or of fame and fortune.
According to Gerald Bentley A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written by the great English writer William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was born in April 1564, in Stratford-Avon of Warwickshire, England. According to Bentley an exact birthday date is unknown, but his baptismal date is April 26, 1564. Shakespeare wrote his first play in his late twenties in London in 1592. Being well involved with the theater, Shakespeare rose quickly as an actor and author. Shakespeare became very popular for his entertaining plays. Having gained much success, he retired in 1610 and returned to Stratford. Shakespeare is believed to have died on his birthday in April 23, 1616. (Bentley, Gerald)
According to Tucker Brooke, Shakespeare is believed to have written A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the 1590s. Brooke thinks the first time the play was performed was between 1595 and 1596. This was during the Elizabethan era when such entertainment would have been greatly enjoyed. The play was believed to have been first printed in 1600. Shakespeare did not want the play or any other of his works printed. With that being the case, many were copied during a performance or sold afterwards without his permission. (Brooke, Tucker)
According to Peter Levi A Midsummer Night’s Dream is different from Shakespeare’s other plays in that it does not have any historical figures.
