School and Home Communication

When it comes to providing children with a well-rounded education, I believe it is extremely important for parents to be involved in their child’s education and communication is the key to ensuring they are involved.   If you do not communicate with parents about what is going on at home and vice versa then they will not be as involved in their child’s educational process.   Communicating with parents can be challenging at times for educators.   There are many different ways that home to school and school to home communication can be utilized.   Monthly newsletters can be very helpful when communicating with parents about what children will be focusing on and accomplishing throughout the month.   The newsletters will include various activities students will be doing, meals they will eat throughout the month, various school trips they may be going on, etc.   When it comes to day to day communication, most schools will have a folder of some kind that will go home with students every day and have activities inside for the parents and children to complete together.   “If parents can work with teachers to support student learning at home, the student may benefit tremendously.” (Powell & Driver, 2013, sec. 2.3)   Teachers will also include various progress reports and send home notes on things that can improved upon in the folders.  
It is extremely important for everyone to have a handbook that outlines the schools policies, procedures, guidelines, etc.   This handbook should also have a list of consequences for not adhering to these policies, procedures and guidelines for children, parents and staff members.   Also any information about the educational facility itself (i.e., a list of the various staff members along with their title and qualifications) should be included in the handbook.   When parents are enrolling...
