Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY

I just read, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. In this story, there were many characters. Some major characters include, Cassie, Stacey, Little Man, Christopher John, T.J., and Big Ma. Some minor characters in this story are, the parents (of Cassie, Stacey, Little Man, and Christopher John), the Wallace`s, the Avery`s, Uncle Hammer, and Mr. Morris. This story was set around the 1930`s in Mississippi, United States. The conflict of this story is the four kids, Cassie, Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man, are all scared that the land will burn down. Another part of the conflict is T.J. always causes mischief. This is the conflict because after school starts, all of the action begins to rise and the weather begins to change. The kids get to see their Uncle Hammer. Then T.J., a family friend, gets beat up by the Avery’s and is attacked by the Wallaces. After these events, a fire starts in the Logan’s field and spreads throughout other land as well. Finally, T.J. went to the chain gang and the Logan’s field got completely burned down.
The setting of this story was set in Mississippi, around the 1930’s. During this time, Mississippi was filled with land, so much it was hard to care for. There were hot and dry summers, cold and wet winters. The typical weather you would imagine. The setting of this story ties in with the conflict because with the dry weather, it causes a higher chance for the land to burn down.
Over time, the setting changes. There is less land than there was already. This foreshadows to the conflict because at the end, the Logan’s field burned down because T.J. joined a chain gang. Which caused a lot of trouble and changed everything in the end.
