Psychology And Health Problems
Scientists have found that there is a direct link between psychology and health. The multi-factorial model in the text summarizes the different factors in life that contribute to the psychology and health of a person. Some of the factors are controllable on a person level while others are not.
Biological factors that affect a person include many things, from the family history of health (genetics) to age, race and gender. Other biological factors can include exposure to various organisms and viruses, inoculations, physiological conditions, as well as how the cardio vascular system reacts to stress.
Environmental factors that can affect a persons health include vehicular safety and environmental concerns such as toxins in the environment. Other items that can be an environmental factor would be water quality, ozone depletion, pollution, radiation, global warming, and natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and hurricanes.
A persons personality can have a major affect on their health. Many attributes of a type A personality can have a negative affect on health, such as the need to control all situations and the drive for perfection. Other personality factors that can affect a persons health are seeking or avoiding health risks or stressors, psychological conflict, extreme optimism or pessimism, holding in anger and frustration, depression, anxiety and hostility.
Behavioral factors are things a person has control over that can contribute to health and psychological issues. Our diet and physical activity levels are two examples of things that we can control that have a direct impact on our overall well being. Other things include our consumption of alcohol, smoking, sleep habits, and interpersonal or social skills. Personal safety, such as using a seatbelt or putting on a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle, are also part of behavioral factors.
