Principles of Developing Positive Relationships with Children Young People and Adults

.1:1 Explain why effective communication is important in developing relationships with children young people and adults.
Communication is a two way process, it involves speaking, listening, hearing, understanding and replying. Communication can be both verbal and non-verbal.   Sometimes non-verbal communication has a more powerful impact than verbal communication. Non-verbal communication includes all kinds of emotional expressions, actions, body language.
Communicating effectively within the school setting, children, young people and adults is a very important part of my role to enable me as a classroom assistant it is vital to develop good, appropriate relationships with the pupils, staff, parents and any other adults involved in the child’s care and learning.   It is important to model effective communication skills, as being adults in the school we need to show positive relationships with other adults this is because the children will copy the behaviour that’s seen between adults. We are more likely to communicate to one another if we have affirmative relationships. In my class the children are welcomed every morning with a smile, good morning and how are you today? Once all the children have arrived we start with some circle time, it promotes the development of communication skills. In my setting we use Makaton and visual aids as some children have learning difficulties, hearing problems and speech problems etc. Makaton helps the children to communicate effectively to prevent them getting frustrated when unable to communicate, some children drop the signs once they have developed there communication skills.
When I am talking with any of children it is important that I am down at their level using eye contact and to use the right type of language that is suitable to their age, individual needs or abilities.
