Plagiarism is one of the cheating behaviors by using someone else’s words, ideas, or work and pretending they are as own, or doing the wrongful appropriation to selves prior works. It has been known as an unfair, unethical, and even an illegal activity. Now plagiarism problems have influence academic world a lot in recent years with the developing of Internet. A national survey published in Education Week found that 54% of students admitted to plagiarizing from the internet. Plagiarism takes many bad effects for both individuals and public academic atmosphere. Huge number of authors would be tort throughout their own ideas or works by the infringement of right. It’s the time to knock the alarm for plagiarism problems. Both public and individuals should take their own responsibility to prevent and avoid plagiarism activity.
Why and how does the plagiarism happened and developed so fast? First there are two kinds of people lead it, the plagiarist and faculty who connives it. The book “Plagiarism is a plague” shows some facts about plagiarism: A 2001 survey from Rutgers University indicated that three out of four high school students stated that they had cheated on a test at least once during that academic year, and the same number confessed to handing in another person’s written work; A 1999 finding shows one third of the one thousand faculty members stated that they aware of student cheating in their classes and did nothing about it.” For the plagiarist, there are many kinds of motivations to plagiarize. First some students who are lazy to do their homework like writing an essay, and doing a research have intentions to cheat from others to save time for gaming or sleeping. Second students who always procrastinates their works until the deadline have the potential motivation to be plagiarists.
