2.1 Explain the importance of reflective practice in continuously improving the quality of service provided
2.2 Demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice
2.3 Describe how own values, belief systems and experiences may effect working practice
Reflective practice is when we think about what we do and how it is done and evaluate any possible changes. If we reflect regularly, we are able to discuss ideas and thoughts with colleagues and identify strengths and weaknesses. By reflecting on practice and how we work with others, will make for our roles more effective and help to gain confidence.
Reflecting on your own work will give opportunities for improvements. It is important to think about what role you have and the impact of what you do has on the children. By understanding this and knowing which particular strategies have worked, we are able to repeat them. For example, I was asked to lead a science experiment on separation; I had all the resources ready and took it in turns to take 5 small groups out to conduct the experiment. The children were engaged and asked plenty of questions and fully understood the purpose of the experiment, but with each group the session became easier to lead as I was able to reflect on the previous groups reactions.
Effective questioning of your experiences enhances your experiences as it enables you to take more control over what you do and develops confidence.
As we examine our existing practice, we need to reflect on the practical side of working with children as well as our beliefs and attitudes. When we think about all aspects of our role, it may seem hard as beliefs can be difficult to change. Sometimes, parents have very different views from us or of the school but professionalism needs to be maintained at all times.
