1.1 | Identify the requirements to carry out a health and safety inspection.Inspections are a way of systematically checking that our working environment and procedures are meeting the required standards.   An inspection should identify hazards and be our first step in introducing measures to improve conditions.   They can be formal, informal, recorded or unrecorded, but what is important is that they are carried out to a set standard at an appropriate frequency.   Some inspections; are required by law.   Most people will be familiar with the need for an annual inspection and safety check on gas boilers.   Examples of other statutory inspections that should be carried out by a competent person include equipment such as lifting equipment, Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEVs) and pressure vessels.   At the Sulzer Birmingham Service Centre (SC Birmingham), the authority for Safety Walks is detailed in Group Policies & Procedures (GPR) 5 – Organisational Structure, Roles, Responsibilities and Authorities.   The actual requirements are enshrined in Site Procedures, Forms & Risk Assessments (SPR) 11 – Birmingham Service Centre – Safety Walks.I have submitted a screen print (Portfolio Reference 1) from our electronic management system “Entropy” (http://www.bsi-entropy.com) and a copy of a Safety Walk (Group Form (GF) 35) recorded on Friday 1st August 2014, which was conducted in SC Birmingham’s Heavy Bay. (Portfolio Reference 2).Safety Walks and audits are also periodically, conducted by our corporate Quality, Environmental, Safety & Health (QESH) counterparts based in Switzerland (Portfolio Reference 3).   The report submitted; was carried out by the Head of QESH and LEAN, between 19th and 21st November 2014.I have also included a screen-print of the location of GPR 1 – Sulzer Rotating Equipment Services – United Kingdom (RES-UK) QESH Manual (Portfolio Reference 4) and a copy of the manual itself...
