Modern vs Classic Sitcoms

MODERN VS CLASSIC SITCOMS

Recently, I realized something interesting about comedy sitcoms.   Shows like “Everybody Loves Raymond” , “ Friends” and “Frasier” have been replaced by shows like “Modern Family”, “The Office” and “30 Rock” .   What this means is that the classical, family-friendly sitcoms with “real” audience laughing effects are not being favoured as they were before.   Now, I believe that people prefer documentary like sitcoms with no laughing effects that get their humor from weird situations.   In my opinion, one of the main reasons for this is that the jokes on the classical comedy shows have been used so much that the audience do not appreciate them anymore.   Lets take “Everybody Loves Raymond” as an example; for 10 seasons, Frank(the father) has been insulting Marie(his wife) about how she is only good for cooking and how he wants to leave him.   These jokes are actually funny lots of the time (hence earning ELR numerous awards) but after 10 seasons, people do not want the same type of jokes with the same laughing effects.   The “new” sitcoms like “Modern Family”, “The Office” and “30 Rock” are documentary like, and do not display an ideal setting like most classic sitcoms do.   They get their humor from real life situations where you would not want to deal with, but cause laughter when you see it from a third person.   Long awkward silences and some eye mimicks can make the audience appreciate the show instead of the classic “How you 'doin?” from Joey Tribbiani (Friends).   However, I have no intention of criticizing the classic sitcoms I have mentions above as they hold their places as masterworks and I have spent most of my childhood laughing about them.   I just want to point out that after all those years, the audience want a break from the classics and are now happy about these new kinds of sitcoms.   However, no one knows what time will bring, we can be laughing to a classical sitcom again in a very short time...
