Explain why the four steps involved in the controlling function are important.
The four functions are: Establishing standards is the core operation to controlling functions within any business standard for goals and targets to be achieved, which is the criterion to critic the performance.   Measuring performance is compatible with deviations because it measures the actual performance.   Measuring performance collects, analyze and/or report information regarding the performance of an individual, group, organization, system or component (http://en.wikipedia.org/). Comparing the actual performance with expected performance which is important because one has to compare the nature of performance with expected targets, and deviation is the close-in point between actual performance and planned targets.   Correcting deviations has to do with how managers use exception to maintain self control over his or her surroundings.   Once the extent of deviations are fully analyzed managers need to extra measures to repair these errors. All have one main source in common, which is the way work enforcements are handled in any type of situation in general.   Each of these functions play important role in the way an organization is being handled and cared for the success which they lead. And they each have a common standard on the structures of an organization.

Why is a good understanding of the various ratios used by accountants and managers important to the controlling function?
Since controlling is made simpler when these functions come together controlling is exercised on the core of these standards. Managers need to be able to exercise the fullness of deviation and the cause of it. Positive and negative aspects have to be analyzed and made sure they are in line with standards and critical and important deviations needs to be discovered by the manager.
