King Alfred the Great
It is truly a fact that cannot be repudiated that America gets her greatness which is deeply woven in the history of Great Britain, particularly in her culture, language, law, the essence of liberty, right to free speech, and our individual rights as free men. These items can be traced back to the development of Anglo-Saxon Christian Provinces of Old England that have slowly progressed over the years in our own land of the Free and the Brave. Let us take a journey back to yesteryear to a time that one would say it only appears as a speck of light on the horizon. With this essence we see that most of what we have today is because of the monarch known as Alfred the Great. King Alfred is regarded as not only the most famous amongst the Saxon Kings, but he is also greatly recognized to be one of the courageous and benevolent kings in all of England’s history. He came to prominence and ascended the throne at a most crucial and critical time. The Vikings had literally conquered a great portion of Saxon territory, they routinely destroyed churches, villages, and towns as well murdering and causing many citizens to flee their homes.   The remaining Saxon provinces in England were on the brink of collapse, and the vast multitude of pagan hordes were at the ready to take over these kingdoms coming ashore from the seas, even if he was successful in holding these forces back especially those who came ashore. With these difficult odds he victoriously repelled the onslaught from the Vikings at bay, by successfully signing peace accords with them and most notably getting a great percentage of them to become Christians (Plummer, 1911).   During his tenure as king, Alfred demonstrated his military tactics and strategies for defending his country, he inspired the younger generation of his kingdom with a plan for the future, his commitment and ardent support for religion and he promoted education amongst his subjects especially the nobility and the clergy....
