In order to ensure efficient and effective security it is imperative to firstly understand the main purpose of security management.   The science of security management has continually evolved and improved significantly over the last 50 year period to what it is now.   Since the early eighties private security has advanced from a comparatively small market presence and status to a position where it now claims professional status.   It is worthy of note that   that the recent government austerity measures have put strain on Police budgets, often resulting in reductions in resources (personnel) which has meant outsourcing of the more traditional Police roles to the private sector [1].   Therefore because of the rapid growth and its related diversity of purpose has however, made the task of defining security less than straight forward.   Security management on the other hand continues to develop, however, there is both a need and a will to professionalise its role even further as large and small organisations are now beginning to see the advantage they bring to increasing profits and to curtail actual loss.   The role and nature of security management, i.e. its definition and scope, is of central importance to understanding the development and future of the profession, but characterising these easy terms proves no easy task.
