Introduction
Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and one of the most largest in the world. She has always been in the forefront of issues relating to politics, economy, peace and conflict resolutions in Africa, hence, the name “Giant of Africa”. In fact Nigeria has it all – an overwhelming blend of religion, ethnicity, people, values, culture, natural and human resources inclusive. These identified areas have made Nigeria a very complex and controversial environment. Thus, the concept of guidance and counseling, its growth and development in Nigeria becomes very important as it has serious implications to national development and advancement.
Guidance and Counseling began to emerge as an identifiable aspect of the Nigerian educational enterprise in the mid ‘50s. It is a discipline whose history emanated from the experience of happenings in the United States of America and it is these happenings that influenced the establishment of Guidance and Counseling as a discipline in Nigeria. In this research, therefore, our focus shall be to trace this history of guidance and counseling to Nigeria. In order for us to succeed in this task, it becomes very pertinent to first of all examine the concepts of guidance and counseling.

The concept of Guidance and Counselling
The word guidance has been defined differently by different scholars, but there is a central meaning. Shartzer and Stone (1976) defined guidance to mean “to direct, pilot or guide”. Idowu (1998) sees it as a family name for all the helping service within the general educational and community systems.
