In the health care industry, our patients rely on our quality care and punctuality when it comes to meeting their needs accurately. Time and time again, miscommunication has led to a drop in quality care and time being wasted on correcting small errors. Whether there is a miscommunication between the physician and the patient, or between the individuals of the medical staff, this miscommunication affects the medical practice as a whole. The health care industry must work towards having the highest level of effective communication possible from the front desk to the nurses to the doctors and back down again. Effective communication is based around the interpersonal relationships that are built within the clinic. Being open, honest and respectful to each other will lead to a stronger bond and trust amongst the medical staff. It is important to have this bond in order to work in unison and display a professional and trustworthy environment for the patients.
Each work environment usually has some type of climate that is created by the interpersonal relationships between the entire staff, but usually beginning with the management. Dr. Gibb created a list of these climates and was able to divide them into supportive climates and defensive climates. Supportive climates, such as spontaneity, empathy and provisionalism are all based on the positive remarks and messages sent between the staff. These climates are seen to be more productive and efficient due to the bond that is created in the work environment. Whereas the defensive climates, such as the control, neutrality and superiority all create very negative vibes and distrust in the work place. No one is perfect and mistakes will be made, but our goal is to limit these mistakes and most importantly, we must act rationally when these mistakes occur.
