                                                    Global Warming
Many of us have heard of the term global warming especially in recent years. The issue of global warming has received a lot of attention from the media, environmental protection groups (for example Green Peace), and from politicians. However, most of us choose not to take the matter seriously or personally not knowing that the environment we live in is the key to life. So what is global warming? According to Spencer (2004), in layman terms it is the projected and observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere. It is a very serious and dramatically urgent problem that each of us should take responsibility for.
According to Mark (2007), over the past century, almost all of the observed temperature increase has been as a result of increase of greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide, ozone, water vapor and methane. This green house gases are produced as a result of burning of fossil fuels. Once discharged into the atmosphere these gases precipitate a phenomenon known as the green house effect. When the heat from the sun reaches the Earth’s surface some is taken in to warm the Earth but most of it is radiated back out of the atmosphere. The green house gases reflect some of the heat energy that would have otherwise been discharged out of the atmosphere. This translates directly to the rise of temperatures in our atmosphere. The rise in atmospheric temperatures causes a ripple effect that affects other aspects of the environment. This is known as the green house effect.
According to Peter (2008), global warming has far reaching implications for all life forms on planet Earth. There are two major effects of global warming on our planet. These are; a rise in the sea levels and an increase of atmospheric temperature. According to Peter (2008), due to thermal expansion of the...
