Father & Son

Father and Son
On this paper, the main topic will be about a song that moved me in some way.
This song, by Cat Stevens, also known as Yusuf Islam, is an interesting one to many
because every father and son could probably relate to. This song is also an example to
all fathers to give their sons advice about what they are going to face in life. Originally,
this song was written for a film, which was about a young man who wanted to leave
home and join the army, whereas his parents wanted him to stay and work on the farm.
This song also reflects the gap between generations However, the film never took off.
The song was released on November, 23 1970 in the album Tea for the Tillerman. The
song, Father and Son, is sort of, a dialog between a father and his son, with Cat
Stevens playing both parts. The father is trying to talk his son out of doing something
which he considers to be fool, somewhat, and instead, settle down and have a family,
as the father is getting on in age and wants to have grandchildren. This song really
shows the relationship between any fathers with his son. The lyrics can have more than
one meaning, and the message that Cat Stevens was trying to send to people all over
the world, has been interpreted in more than one way. Hence, I will interpret the lyrics in
my way and show the most likely message the Stevens was trying to send. However, to
begin with, the song must be listened to and the lyrics must be shown. This is a link to
the song and its lyrics too,

Father:
It’s not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy
You’re still young, that’s your fault,
There’s so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy
I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy,
To be calm when you’ve found something going on
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you’ve got
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not
Son:...
