“Pregnancy”

This is a poem written by Sally-Ann Murray. The title of the poem is already describing what the context of the poem is. How a young mother is experiencing her time up until birth.
In the first stanza the “I” which refers to the speaker, meaning the mother. When referring to “you” they are talk about the fetus inside of the mother. In this stanza the woman is unsure about her feelings towards the physical changes during pregnancy as well as the unborn baby reflected in line 2 “ to feel I don’t know what”.   The speaker make use of simile in line 3-4 “as now and the knock, softly like a student entering the presence of authority”. When a student enters the presence of authority they humble themselves, is more respectful and the fetus movement explained as knocking is compared to that of a student. Later on in the stanza the “knocking” gets emphasized more, than referred to as “butt” meaning the fetus is making its presence more known.
In the second stanza “Nothing, except to each week’s waiting which throws me back upon my body.” refers to the woman just having to wait to learn more about the mystery which is the fetus. Trying to figure out what the gender is going to be and will it have her or the father’s temperament. All these questions and realizing she only needs to rely on her body for the answers to this mystery. With the “mirrors muteness” personification comes into play is this stanza just showing the woman is frustrated by not getting any answers.
In the third stanza the woman is struggling to accept the inability to answer the questions, she feels the fetus is knocking to get answers to. She is left with so many questions wandering if life is the biggest quest or is there something more. The metaphor...
