Objectives are put in place for many reasons, to know what you are working towards or to have a focus on. The aim is to achieve these within a time frame with available resources. In general, objectives are more specific and easier to measure than goals. Objectives are basic tools that underlie all planning and strategic activities. They serve as the basis for creating policy and evaluating performance. At my place of work the businesses main objectives are to increase profit, reduce cost and to make processes more efficient, my personal objective would be created around the basis’s on how I will need to development myself to help the business meet their goals. If one of my organisations objectives were to have everyone up to date with the latest CRM (customer relationship management) software I would make sure my personal objective was to include having a training day set up with one of our customer service reps to get up to date with the system and software. I would also make sure training was then set up for all employees and we had a backup procedure if anyone was unsure.

When work objectives are set these have an impact on all different levels in the business, objectives should be set that are related to market position, market share, revenue and profit. The work objective is the overall result the business is working towards; to achieve this all levels of the business need to have separate objectives. These are referred to as cascading objectives. Setting and cascading goals throughout the organization is vital to achieving company objectives.  You can use the SMART criteria to set these as well. Below is an example of cascading objectives –
