Part I |

In the first part the reader is introduced to the frightening world in which the main character lives. The story is set in London, which is part of Oceania, one of the three powers of the world. The main character is called Winston Smith; he’s 39 years old and works in the Ministry of Truth. In his job he has to falsify media in such a way that also in hindsight the party has always been right. Winston is a member of the party, but he’s not loyal to it. |
In the first part of the book Winston starts what can be called a little rebellion against the power of the state, by keeping a diary. Actually it’s forbidden to own a diary and of course it’s even worse to write one. Winston breaks both rules and writes sentences like “down with Big Brother” into his diary. If this was detected, he would be reported to the Thought Police. But as you can guess, Winston keeps it as well hidden as possible. |

Part II |

The second part of the book can be seen as the most positive section. It charts not only the growing relationship between Winston and Julia and thus examines the possibility of the survival of a human relationship, but also the deepening of Winston’s rebellion. |
Julia is also against the Party, but she’s got a completely different attitude to Winston’s. Nevertheless, Winston and Julia try to get in contact with the so-called “Brotherhood”. This is an underground organization which works against the Party, under the rule of the Party’s arch enemy Emmanuel Goldstein. |
Winston and Julia really succeed in getting in contact with the Brotherhood, through a member of the inner Party, called O’Brien. O’Brien organizes that they get the banned book of Emmanuel Goldstein and...
