Business Ethics

Generally, ethics deals with accessing morals based on values which are generally accepted in a society. Nevertheless, unethical behaviours have been with man since time immemorial. Morals are set of set of beliefs based on values which determines an individual/ group’s perception about something. What determines morality? Absolutism Vs Relativism?
Absolutism states that what is wrong is consistent in all places while relativism states that what is wrong varies according to the individuals/ society/culture or set of circumstances. Granted relativism has problems - undermines moral criticism, it allows for oppression of those with minority views as well as softening “harsh” realities.   Most ethicists reject the theory of ethical relativism. Some claim that while the moral practices of societies may differ, the fundamental moral principles underlying these practices DO NOT. -   Markkula centre for applied ethics. To be ethically sound, one needs good morals and core values such as honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness, compassion, perseverance, and above all COURAGE.   Also one needs to practice the GOLDEN RULE- “DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.
Business ethics is determined by decision making, people in the business and according to principles of the business.   Issues and challenges that arise at the work place gives rise to decision making, however, decision making is the ability to determine what is right from wrong and being committed to doing what is right. For effective decision making, one needs to gather enough material facts; identify relevant useful ethical issues, weigh and prioritize all affected parties without taking sides,   consider your existing obligations, identify courses of action to be taken, examine the consequences and consider   the practicality   of your decision, evaluate the impact of the decision on your character and others.
