Assignment 3 - System structure and function

TASK 1

1. Using my knowledge and understanding I will explain energy transportation process using anatomy and physiology to support discussion. I will describe how energy is used by the body related to function and homeostatic maintenance.

For us humans to get energy to do things we need to eat food which includes variety of vitamins, minerals, fats and sugars, we also need to drink plenty of water. Digestive system breaks the food down into the form that our body can use it for energy. This means that solid food is dissolved and then the soluble products are absorbed into the bloodstream and carried by the blood all around the body delivering food to the living cells in all parts of the body such as the muscles, brain, heart and kidneys. Digestion is mainly chemical process.

The digestive tract, also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, starts at the mouth, continues to the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (the colon) and rectum, it ends at the anus. The entire system is about 9 meters long.

Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing the food and where saliva is mixed to it. Teeth are designed for breaking down food to ease them through the digestion process. Saliva, which is secreted by the salivary glands in the mouth, contains an enzyme, salivary amylase, which breaks down starch.
Swallowing pushes chewed food into the oesophagus, where it passes through the pharynx. Food takes the form of a bolus (a small round mass) and digestion becomes involuntary. A series of muscular contractions, peristalsis, transports food through the rest of the system. The oesophagus empties into the stomach.
Stomach is a muscular sac that acts as a storage for food so that body has time to digest   meals properly.
The stomach’s gastric juice, which is mainly a mix of hydrochloric...
