Have you ever thought becoming a stable parent with strong family values was impossible due to your upbringing in a dysfunctional home?   Do not give up hope.   As an adult, you must take responsibility for your family’s well-being. Although it will be tough, it will also be worth the effort. Adults raised in a dysfunctional home can overcome the effects to bring up the next generation with strengthened values through faith, forgiveness, and positive role modeling.
My life story is a demonstration of that truth. My mother married my father at the early age of 15 in an attempt to escape the sexual abuse she endured at home. She married my father and found more abuse awaiting her. A few years later, she decided to divorce my father. He became very angry with her. He tried to kidnap me from my grandmother’s home without success. He then burned down our house believing that my mother and I were asleep inside. My father’s decision to burn our house down along with other criminal activities caused him to spent most of his life in prison. My mother divorced my father when I was about 4 years old. While my father’s criminal activity contributed to his physical absence, my mother was emotionally, absent as well.
Numerous boyfriends after my parents divorced, my mother met the man of her dreams. At least that is what she had originally thought. The man had a good job, a nice family, and seemed to care about everything that was important to her. Soon after they married, she gave birth to my younger sister and had to return to work. While she worked, her new husband, Bobby, stayed at home with my sister and I. He began to abuse me sexually. I decided that the abuse had to stop. I ran away from home, although I did not get very far. While hiding in the backyard, I waited for my mother to return home...
