When we first moved into our new house, I was excited and a little relieved because I was tired of sharing a room with my brothers. I figured that I was 12yrs. Old and I should have my own room. Truthfully, I was just the tiniest bit nervous, because this was the first time in my life that I would be sleeping alone. With 5 other children in the house, having a room to yourself was a luxury. The room was kind of small, but that was ok with me because it was mine. I had a view of either the street in front of the house, or the “empty” house across from us on the right side.
The first few nights went be without any issues. I spent a lot of time in that room by myself. Weather reading a book or listening to my music, it didn’t matter to me, I was just glad for the solitude. From the house across the street, I would sometimes notice a light on in the upstairs window. I didn’t pay it much attention at first, but it did strike me as kind of odd, because the house was empty and the bottom half was boarded up. My mom’s explanation was “maybe someone left the light on, or maybe someone is fixing the house up.” Now that sounded ok, but I was beginning to have other ideas.
One day while my mom was at work, I decided to go do a little investigating. I broke in through a back window, I had to tear down the ply wood and break the window. The inside of the house was very dark and dusty. The air was stale, smelling of wood and a strong pungent smell that I didn’t want to speculate on. I made my way upstairs to the room I would see the lights in. Of course there was nothing or no one in the room, but I felt just a little bit better about the situation.
Later that night, I was lying in my room watching TV, when I noticed the light on again. I knew for a fact now that something was going on here. So I sat there staring out the window waiting on I don’t know what. After a few minutes of this I grew bored, so I...
